Health Talk: Good Fats For Your Body (Even for Vegetarians)

Tuesday, October 03, 2017

Last month after yearsss, I decided to diet. And it's not because I am not happy with my body, I think I am too comfortable in it already that I don't seem to care anymore if I gain weight (compared to my younger years!). I also got inspired by the before and afters from Noom. My deciding factor though was my best friend's wedding, where I had to wear a gown. You will never see me in gown, haha! But since this is a special occasion, I prepared myself for it by working out daily and being a bit more watchful with what I take in.

Throughout the short process, I talked to my fitness friends and learned about the new fad diet called Ketogenic, or the low carb high fat diet. It's the only weight-loss scheme where you are allowed to eat BACON and CHICHARON! I know I cannot fully follow Keto because I am a vegetarian, but I learned a bit from it--that fat is not always bad!

Since we're on the topic of good fats, here are healthy fats that even vegetarians can enjoy:

1) Nuts and Seeds

I am so much into snacking especially during midnight while watching my kdrama, but I think what made me lose weight was when I stopped the chips and junk, and turn to nuts and seeds. My favorites are walnuts and peanuts, and sunflower and chia.

2) Avocados

Avocados are good for you as they are also great source of fiber and anti-oxidant.

3) Black Olives

Good snack, or something to add to your salad.

4) Dark Chocolate

Good anti-oxidants because of its flavinoids (plant-based). Get the ones with at least 70 percent cocoa content.

5) Tofu and Eggs

My ref staples, since you can try different recipes with just these ingredients!

6) Parmesan Cheese

I'm so happy that Keto also promotes cheese! Parmesan cheese is said to have more protein than meats and eggs, and has bone-building calcium content so it's good for you!

7) Canola Oil

One of the healthiest oils in the market, canola oil contains heart-healthy nutrients called "phytosterols" which reduce the risk of having coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular ailments.

Golden Fiesta Canola Oil contains phytosterols, an all-natural plant extract, seeds of canola flowers, and is also rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6.

Vegetarian's heaven in Baler: Charlie Does. They serve all-veg menu.

What to get! In the middle of my diet is my friend's bridal shower where food is just so attractive!!!

A takeaway in my short-lived diet (hehe) is to just eat moderately. Choose what's "worth it" for you, and never resort to deprivations. Find that balance. Eat your greens and drink lots of water! What I have picked up from my personal health month is that I can drink coffee even without sugar and still enjoy it! It's the littlest things that we form as habits everyday that can make or break us. So enjoy, but be mindful of everything you do. With that, you might even add more years in your life!
