Big Fish

Saturday, July 10, 2010

First night that everyone's out of town! Ate went home late after work plus post-work hangouts, and so since no one's home to decide on which teleserye to watch tonight, I decided to watch Big Fish. I can't remember when was the first time I watched it, but I know I really loved the film.

First, it is charming:
Josephine (Will Bloom's wife): I'd like to take your picture.
Edward Bloom: Oh you don't need a picture. Just look up "handsome" in the dictionary.

Second, I love that lead character Edward Bloom is a risk taker.
"There comes a point when any reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit he made a mistake. The truth is...I was never a reasonable man." -Edward Bloom

Third reason, I love the symbolisms and allusions used in the film to show how man should live his life to the fullest. We are, after all, the star of this stage! :-)

"Most men, they'll tell you a story straight through. It won't be complicated, but it won't be interesting either."

"A man tells so many stories that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal."

Big Fish also brought the topic on death: that when you know how you're going to die, what is there to fear? You'll do everything you want! I remembered that when you've endured or if you're in a deep pain right now, it's as if there's nothing else that will harm or hurt you. And you'll be living your life to the fullest.

"I was thinking about death and all. About seeing how you're gonna die. I mean, on one hand, if dying was all you thought about, it could kind of screw you up. But it could kind of help you, couldn't it? Because you'd know that everything else you can survive."

And fifth, but not the last reason (coz there's so many reasons to love this movie!) is that Edward teaches us that we are BIGGER than what we think we are. We just have to go through it all--even the rough part of life.

"It occurred to me then, that perhaps the reason for my growth was I was intended to larger things. After all, a giant man can't have an ordinary-sized life."

I love re-watching movies that I haven't seen for a long time, and knew I liked it then. I wanted to remember why, and also, I'd like to find out if the impression changed. Big Fish didn't fail me on this second time around. :-)

Have you ever heard a joke so many times you've forgotten why it's funny? And then you hear it again and suddenly it's new. You remember why you loved it in the first place. - Will Bloom

I want to be that "big fish"--to escape life's dictation and comfort zone, and become the best person I can maximumly ever be! :-)

On a totally different note, here are more photos CJ sent to me today :-) She did my make up, the photography, plus the post-processing. :) Such a talented friend! Hehe!

My nail color now is actually the same with our new wall paint, haha! :D

I love blowing bubbles pic. =) It looks so carefree and happy! :)

I don't smoke.
But I do like it when it makes the person look not an addict, but sophisticated...Like old time Hollywood sophisticated. ;p Doing this for art's sake. Haha! :D
