Gus* Modern Furniture

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Back in grade school, I used to look forward to visiting a neighborhood friend with a beautiful house. Their place has this earthy appeal, accented with wood-finished furniture, complimented by pin lights that made their living room darker than usual (unlike our sunny happy Crazy Gonzales residence!).

I think this was my first fascination with personal space design. Aside from being a writer or an advertising practitioner, one of my pa-college dream was to become an interior decorator. Frustrated ako to create my own beautiful space!

My love for design came back when I visited the ongoing GUS* exhibit yesterday in Greenbelt 5 (near the concierge)

Kaye Awatin and I were invited by Sir Jonel Uy

In the exhibit, I learned that the brand originated from Canada, and that GUS was the result of a passion for elegant minimal furniture. Each piece is designed and manufactured in-house and is selected for its timeless design. Their furnishings have been chosen for their ability to work together, or as stand-alone, in residential, contract and hospitality environments.

I love this dark tone set-up, accented with the orange throw pillow

Really comfortable bi-sectional sofas. Perfect for condo living (Nag babalak? Hehe!)

Mistook this cool table's design as "may kagat" sa sides, the shape daw ay isang state pala. Cute

Gus believes that it is the object’s simplicity which lends it the elegance that can mix with the industrial. Inspiration comes from simple forms and honest materials. Combining great design with practical purpose - a true modern furniture, fit for the sensible-living urbanite.
Look at those clean lines:

Another set-up you'll see in the exhibit

Awesome clear tables (or can be used as stools or side table) with interesting tree ring markings design

Since we've got lots of spare time, we headed over to GUS showroom located at the Ground Floor of the Residences at Greenbelt (TRAG), Makati.

Learned that it is the first international dealer outside US and Canada.

An interesting showroom with a huge blackboard wall on one side

A Bathurst 2-door cabinet, a nice side unit with lots of storage space. And a Euclid Ottoman, multifunctional which can be used as a bench or coffee table

Nicole Ottoman--can also be used as table or bench

I love the accents they used to compliment the GUS pieces. Modern paintings, minimalist clocks, cute alarm clocks...

Kaye wants the bisectionals.

Cloth Samples

Tests

Stainless cube with polished edges

I love the Upcycle Ottoman with Noble Coffee print. This unique piece is made of repurposed durable bags, which would otherwise be thrown away.

An interesting Light Stick

Wooden table can also be used as bench

Jane 2-seater sofa. Like their other furnitures, constructed in support of responsible forest management

One of Gus' few colored pieces

In love with rocking chairs

Annex Media Stand, made for entertainment rooms

Elegant Acrylic Side Table

This took me back to my neighborhood friend's beautiful house

We were very fortunate to meet and get to talk with Ms. Anne Young of Living Space Home Furnishings, a young and innovative company that aims to bring in high quality modern design furniture, that can be enjoyed by the public.

Her team brought the Gus brand to the Philippines:

“We wanted to bring in a brand that has the same youthful energy and awareness on social responsibility as Living Space and that is GUS. One of the aspects of CSR is its advocacy on eco-friendly living. In our own little way, we create awareness on being environmental friendly through our furniture pieces. Through FSC, we only use woods that are sourced from well-managed forest.”

Visit Gus 2012 Fall Collection furniture exhibit at Greenbelt 5, Makati City starting June 15 until June 17, 2012 during mall hours from 10am – 9pm.
Aside from their Greenbelt Residences branch, the second GUS showroom is located in Design Pod, situated along Connecticut St. in Greenhills, San Juan.
